Conversations with Berrett & Harrison

The band Berrett & Harrison will headline this year's Life Rocks! Benefit Concert to Prevent Youth Suicide during National Suicide Prevention Week (Sept. 5 -12). We sat down with them to learn a little more about what music means to them!

How long have you been playing together as a band?
We have been playing music together for about four years.

What do you love most about music?
Music is a channel by which a person can express emotions, feelings, and concepts too complex or profound for words alone. What's so endearing about music and the reason it has always thrived and will always survive is that it is a natural extension of human communication, adding dimensions to what a human being is able to convey beyond language. And it's simply fun, which says as much or more than any other reason.

You're playing a show for CrisisLink on Sept. 9. Why do you support CrisisLink?
CrisisLink is a difficult cause NOT to support. It's beautiful in the sense that it stands for something with no political undertones- it's not something anyone can deny the importance and relevance of.

Is it important for teens and people your age to know about CrisisLink? Why?
Absolutely. People who are in the dark place in their minds need to know that there's an ever-present support system that they can turn to.

You can catch Berrett & Harrison at CrisisLink's Life Rocks! Benefit Concert at Jammin' Java on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 6-9pm. If you're interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Elizabeth Yen by email or phone at 703-527-6016.

Schools Ready to Help with 2010-2011 Quick Guide to Community Resources

School guidance counselors and social workers will have access to the most recent contact information for community services as they help students cope with a wide variety of family and personal issues this fall. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC), with a first-time contribution from CrisisLink, has just published a completely updated version of this most popular 80-page pocket guide. Almost 2,500 copies were distributed free of charge to area school systems.

“I am pleased to announce publication of the 2010-2011 Quick Guide,” said Harry J. “Hal” Parrish II, Chairman of NVRC. “In the more than 25 years since the Quick Guide was first published, it has come to be relied on as a definitive source of critical information about human services for Northern Virginia residents. It represents one of our most effective examples of regional cooperation."

The 2010-2011 Quick Guide provides information about services including abuse and neglect of children or adults, alcohol and drug abuse, consumer complaints and protection, day care for children and adults, alcohol and drug abuse, consumer protection, day care for children and adults, disability issues, emergency needs, foreclosure counseling, multicultural services, health care information, shelters, and services for seniors and youth.

To purchase a copy of the Quick Guide call 703.642.0700 or download the order form from www.novaregion.org.

The Quick Guide online, at www.novaregion.org/quickguide, is updated throughout the year. The Quick Guide is a useful paper partner to the much more detailed information on services at www.211virginia.org .

The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC), which publishes the Quick Guide annually, is a coalition of local governments focused on regional cooperation in addressing problems of greater than local significance. For more information about NVRC, check the web site www.novaregion.org or call 703.642.0700.
